OUR CONFEDERATE PAGE

This week I received an e-mail from a nice northern lady...She had visited my Confederate page and told me she was interested in the Civil War from a Southerner's point of view...I've done a lot of thinking since I received that letter....

Most of my dad's people at that time were in Alabama....a few had migrated to Texas and Arkansas....Most of my mom's people were in Mississippi...a few in Louisiana and Texas...

Most of my family lines go back to the 1600s...They fought in the Revolution...the war of 1812...the Indian Wars and the Spanish American War...

Joseph Peavey,Sr. provided horses and supplies to the struggling revolution... He also provided 2 of his sons to fight...Abraham and Dial Peavey....Dial's son Wade H. Peavey fought in the War of 1812...How strange that Wade's sons Leroy M. Peevey & Robert W. Peevey should fight in a war against his fellow Americans, probably sons and grandsons of men who fought along side him for American Independence...more than likely with weapons their grandfather's fought with....

My g-grandfather Richard Henry Medlin was a 20 year old college student living in New Hope Alabama with his 2 brothers and mother when war came...His father, Richard Medlin, had fought in the Seminole Indian Wars in Florida...Richard Henry lost his father when he was 1 year old...Richard died of complications due to the yellow fever he had brought back from the swamps of Florida...Richard Henry's mother Lucinda Childress Medlin had all three of her sons in prisoner-of war camps during the war...She was left alone with her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Wright Medlin and 2 small boys under 3 years of age...The federal army captured Alabama early in the war...They burnt Lucinda's home New Hope to the ground...She and Elizabeth and the 2 children lived in the woods...The 2 children died either due to starvation or exposure...

When Athens, Alabama was captured...the German general turning the troops loose for one hour telling them "for one hour I will turn my back"...The college where most of my female ancestors went, Athen's Woman's College, was offlimits....Abraham Lincoln was friends with the head-mistress and gave orders to leave it alone...The young girls standing on the balconies that night singing "Dixie"....And the young federal soldiers sitting on the grass outside and listening...The custodian of the Athen's Archives today is a descendant of one of those girls and one of those young federal soldiers....

Why did they go to war? I think some of them joined right away...They believed in States Rights...Slavery was an issue for some of them...But most of them were just decent honourable men living their lives out the best way they could...Raising their children...going to Church...and when the enemy came over the hill..they picked up their weapons...
